- Macleans Magazine: The real estate gamble [December 17, 2009]
Excerpt: “Yet in the rush to get into the housing market, Canadians have spurned more traditional savings vehicles like registered retirement savings plans. In fact until recently Canada could no longer lay claim to being a nation of savers, as it once proudly did. A study last year by the Vanier Institute of the Family found average savings had fallen to just $2,000 a year, or less than three per cent of disposable income, putting Canada well behind other developed countries like France (12 per cent) and Germany (11 per cent)”.
- Vancouver Sun: Definition of traditional family expanding [December 5, 2009]
Excerpt: “In a depressing litany of projected household spending increases over the next 25 years, the Vanier Institute of the Family included funerals (up 58 per cent) and bingo (up 47 per cent). The only bright spot is for younger family members. If their parents have any money left, they're likely to help out with more cash and support”.
- Canadian Christianity.com: Study shows Canada’s divorce rates have declined [December 5, 2009]
Excerpt: “The Vanier Institute of the Family has released a study that shows divorce rates in Canada have declined markedly since the 1990s. Divorce rates peaked in 1987, according to the study, entitled Divorce: Facts, Causes and Consequences. Rates declined steadily until 1997, and have held at the lower level since then. The study shows rates of conjugal violence also declined between 1993 and 2004”.
- Saskatoonhomepage.ca: Saskatoon Child-Friendly [December 1, 2009]
Excerpt: "Studies released earlier this fall indicate that urban sprawl takes a toll on children's health.
The Vanier Institute of the Family cites that because everything is so spread out, children are driven everywhere. Spokesperson Katherine Scott explains the way cities are built actively discourages walking and biking among children. Urban planner, Juan Torres, from the University of Montreal, says children gain a sense of independence and can better understand the concept of common space when they can navigate themselves outside".
- Toronto Sun : Avoid the holiday debt hangover [December 1, 2009]
Excerpt: “The number of personal bankruptcies in Canada soared in September, gaining 45.5%, according to government data. More than 600,000 Canadian households have a dangerously high debt service ratio of more than 40%, a report from the Vanier Institute found earlier this year. In the past 20 years, the average household income has gained 12%, while debt is up 71%, growing six times faster than incomes, the report said”.
