Anniversary Lecture "Reframes"
the National Dialogue on Family Life

OTTAWA—In honour of the upcoming fortieth anniversary of the Vanier Institute of the Family, sociologist Kerry Daly of the University of Guelph will deliver a lecture entitled "Forty Years On: Reframed Family Portraits." Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, will attend the lecture. As Patron of the Vanier Institute of the Family, the Governor General will say a few words at the beginning of the event, which will take place in the Laurier Room of the Château Laurier in Ottawa on Thursday, October 14, 2004 at 7 p.m. The lecture is open to media coverage.

"It is a dangerous practice to talk about the family," admits Dr. Daly. "Discussion of family is political, and it is contentious, and it can divide." In his lecture, he will suggest that the way we think about family is in need of "reframing." Illustrating his points with sometimes-humorous glimpses of Canadian family life over the last forty years, Dr. Daly will talk about "the dominant stories that keep us stuck in a negative image of family," and "how we might reframe those stories in order to think differently about what family is and what it does."

According to Dr. Daly, "Our family arrangements are diverse, changing and, most importantly, unresolved. Like democracy, the family always resides in a tension between the comfort of conformity and the appetite for social change."

The Vanier Institute of the Family was established in 1965 under the patronage of Their Excellencies Governor General Georges Vanier and Madame Pauline Vanier. The Fortieth Anniversary Lecture will serve as the launch for the Vanier Institute's national tour in 2005, when speakers will travel across Canada lecturing on the theme of families today.
